Q & A

What kind of applications are best suited for the Web Browser Interface?

Our research shows that this type of facility is best suited for customer service portals or report distribution applications. For Instance

A distributor wants to make sales invoices and supporting documentation available to their customers via the Web. The customer enters the Web page with their exclusive log in and password. The customer has access only to their own invoices and supporting information. Supporting information could include: Purchase Orders, Delivery receipts and/or correspondence.

A commodities trader wants to make their client’s daily position reports available via the Web. This highly secure information usually requires a phone call and fax reply. The Web page allows for a secure log in and exclusive access to one or more of the client’s specific report pages.

A world wide engineering firm needs to distribute individual project budget reports to over 1200 locations on a monthly basis. Because the various locations have diverse types of communications capabilities, thick client access to the electronic report warehouse is unrealistic. The Web site could provide a secure mechanism for access to site specific budget report pages based on the user login and password.

How are reports and documents indexed for the Web?

This would be a site specific consideration. The indexing scheme are optimized for the access provided by the thin client (WEB) application.  Indexing can control access to based on document type and content.

What if the customer wants to limit the availability of information on the Web site, such as; only 90 days of invoices or 6 months worth of budget reports?

Marketing research concluded that this would probably be the case more often than not. In response, Hitec Integration developed a number of tools to automate the house cleaning of information. These tools are designed to be site governed and user definable.

What type licensing is required for the Web Services?

Using Hitec's WEB hosting services eliminates the need for expensive hardware and software licenses.  If a user wants to host their own facility, Hitec can quote the entire system.

How fast is the retrieval on the Web based systems?

This is variable based on the index optimization and the speed of the platforms utilized. Hitec Integration has tested searching on ½ million pages and has successfully processed from 2 to 6 requests per second. The speed of the actual display at the screen for users would vary based on a large number of factors such as: band width at the user site, total number of pages retrieved, speed of hardware, etc.. It has been a design goal to average under 15 seconds for most types of retrieval and display over 28KB dial up lines.

Our invoices use printer form overlays in the main COLD/ERM system. Can users on the Web view the invoices like a printed page with the form and text visible?

Yes. Applications that customarily use electronic form overlays when printing are delivered to the Web browser in PDF format. Multiple page invoices are delivered in document format (multiple pages in a single file) and can be printed by the Web user.

Our Web Servers are Unix based. Will the Web application work in this environment?

Yes,  Hitec has chosen to use JAVA  for developing the core Web application. The interworking with the COLD/ERM files requires NT/2000/2003 for the indexing application.

Can I develop a Web front end using my own development tools?

Yes. Hitec Integration, Inc., can provide the specifications for Web developer and the API for the internal messaging requirements. Tools such as ASP, VB, Pearl, CGI and other Web Development platforms that allow for embedded logic can be utilized. The Hitec middleware license and back end applications are all separately purchased items.

How is security handled on the Web.

Hitec adds an additional layer of security between the Web page and the COLD/ERM files. A log in and password on the Web page is associated with a SQL based security module that controls the search entries, allowing only the assigned individuals into their own specific data.

Can I get a demonstration of the Web capability?

Yes. A demonstration Web page is maintained on a Hitec Secure site. Call Jim Scavio at 952-808-3250 or drop an E-mail with your name and phone number to scavio@hitec-integration.com. You will be given all the information you need to access the demonstration site.
