OLE2 automation is a standard introduced by Microsoft that applications may use to expose the objects they manage to additional development tools. Hitec uses this concept to provide hundreds of different custom applications that enhance the use of information stored by the DataStore COLD system.

DataStore for Windows exposes it's index and search functionality as objects that can be manipulated directly by another application which supports the OLE Automation standard. Ole aware application development tools such as; Visual Basic, Power Builder and Microsoft macro languages available in Excel, Word etc., can be used to quickly develop custom interfaces and controls.

This powerful open application interface (API) can provide the central co-ordination for more comprehensive application integration whereby any number of desktop processes can be combined to create a line of business application.
